Amit Shah’s scheduled visit to Bengal has been postponed by nearly a week. The Home Minister was expected to arrive in Kolkata on the night of May 31 and attend two programs on June 1—one at Science City Grounds and another at the Westin Hotel. After these events, he was to return to the capital the same night. However, all these plans have been put on hold.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bengal visit remains unchanged and is proceeding as planned. In contrast, Amit Shah’s postponement has caused disappointment among BJP leaders and workers in Bengal. Officially, no BJP leader has commented on the reasons behind the sudden change. The Bengal BJP has also not formally announced Shah’s visit, although his arrival was widely anticipated.
The postponement coincides with the ongoing process of selecting BJP’s national president. According to sources, this selection may be finalized within the current week. The BJP’s organizational policy requires that at least half of the state units complete their president elections before the national president can be chosen. Presently, 23 of 36 states have not yet completed this process.
Bengal is among the states yet to elect its BJP state president. Until this and other pending state-level leadership selections are completed, the party is unable to move forward with the national president election. Amit Shah’s visit is now expected to take place in the first week of June, after the organizational tasks are concluded.
When Shah does visit Bengal, he is expected to assess the party’s organizational status on the ground. The BJP is preparing for the 2026 Bengal Assembly elections, and this visit will focus on reviewing the current party structure and performance. Meanwhile, the delay in Shah’s visit reflects the current state of organizational work within the BJP.
